Beverly Alimony Attorney
Essex County Divorce Lawyer Handling Matters of Spousal Support
Spousal support, also known as alimony, can be either a temporary or permanent financial arrangement in which one spouse is required to provide a monetary amount to the other, based on certain criteria.
At David M. Gabriel & Associates, we understand both sides of the story. We work with clients who hope to collect alimony payments from their former spouse and those who wish to defend themselves against having to pay spousal support. To schedule an appointment with David M. Gabriel, an experienced family law attorney, contact our Salem, Lynn or Beverly law offices at 978-712-4825 or 781-593-9980.
Spousal Maintenance in Massachusetts
An award of alimony is dependent upon a multitude of factors. Although the state of Massachusetts provides determination guidelines, alimony is not an automatic guarantee. It tends to become more appropriate the longer the marriage and the greater the disparity of income between the parties.
The chief criteria for determining the appropriateness and amount of spousal support are generally:
- The length of the marriage, particularly if it has lasted 10 or more years
- Contributions to the marriage, such as putting a spouse through medical school or staying out of the workforce to be a child caregiver
- The financial need of a party based on education and earning potential
- The ability of one party to pay another
As your legal counsel, we can negotiate structured alimony as part of your divorce agreement or represent you in court proceedings.
