Paternity Action to Establish Financial Support or Child Visitation and Custody

There is nothing you wouldn’t do for your child. Protecting your relationship with your child and getting the support you need for the care and well-being of your child are your top priority. When parents are not married, it is not unusual to be frightened or uncertain about their rights or obligations. You should know that parents who were never married have all of the same custody rights and financial obligations under Massachusetts law as parents who are divorced.

We represent either party in paternity actions, whether you are a mother asserting your rights to financial support or a father establishing your rights to visitation or shared custody. Our lawyers have more than 25 years, providing proactive and personalized legal counsel tailored to meet your needs. We are dedicated to fighting hard to represent your interests.

Representing Fathers’ Rights in Paternity Matters

Genetic marker testing (a blood test) can quickly resolve the question of whether an individual is indeed the father.

  • If you are challenging a paternity claim, we can arrange a DNA test to prove you are not the father.
  • If you are the mother, we can get the court to compel a paternity test (if necessary). If the test results are positive, we can help establish orders for child support, medical insurance, day care and other financial provisions. We can also represent you in fighting attempts for custody/visitation if you have evidence.
  • If you are asserting that you are the father, we can set up a test to prove it, and initiate family court proceedings to determine the amount of visitation (or seek shared or sole custody).
  • If you are married but believe that the child you are raising may not be yours, your options may be limited – you need experienced legal counsel.
